SUMMARY

The project approaches the study and analysis of racism by focusing on the stage of adolescence, which coincides with Secondary School. This project is a continuation of a brief exploratory study, carried out during the 2005/2006 academic year by part of the team, on young people’s and adolescents’ -mainly immigrants- perceptions and experiences of possible events of discrimination and racism in their immediate context.

Although this initial approach was positive, we feel that it is limited. This is why we propose to continue the project, intending to: a) on one hand, complement the collection of data, using not only the information provided by the boys and girls but extending the sample to include other people from the social and family contexts of these adolescents (family members, friends, classmates, teachers, all, of course, of different origins, including the host country), and b) on the other hand, design, prepare, and evaluate didactic materials for preventing racist conduct and attitudes in collaboration with teachers and students.

The final result of the work we have presented is the preparation of a guide for acting against racism, meant for teachers and/or educators who work both in educational centers and in other associations.
This guide has two phases:

1.    The first focuses on an analysis based on the perceptions of the people affected, in order to try to respond to questions related to the subtle and explicit forms in which racism manifests itself, as well as to its implications and consequences (discrimination, exclusion, violence).

2. The second phase is oriented toward providing teachers and and other professionals with information and materials that are relevant for recognizing, understanding, interpreting, and managing these types of situations.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

This project is a result of the need to carry out an analysis based on the perception of the people affected (adolescents, parents, friends, teachers, and social educators, of different origins), an analysis that attempts to respond to questions related to the subtle as well as the explicit forms in which racism manifests itself, and to its implications and consequences (discrimination, exclusion, violence). The research will focus on the age group of young people from 12 to 18 years old. The purpose of the study it to provide teachers, educators and other professionals with information and materials that are relevant for recognizing, understanding, interpreting, and managing these types of situations.

The initial objectives are:

1.    To become familiar with the perception that young people and other people in their immediate context have regarding experiences/situations of racism.

2.    To identify experiences and intervention strategies used by educators with groups of adolescents with the intention of analyzing and managing situations of racism.

3.    To design a guide for acting against racism for teachers, educators, and professionals who work in educational centers and other associations.
