Más chocante es que el gaditano Pomponio Mela

(2.96) alude a la creencia de algunos de que Carteia 
era Tartessos: 
 

 
  
"Más adelante se abre un golfo en el cual 
está Carteia, ciudad habitada por fenicios,
 trasladados de África, que algunos creen
 que es la antigua TARTESSOS."
